Photo Workshop Tour: Day One (Travel Day)
I made a short detour through Buchanan, Virginia yesterday traveling north along I-81, out of the Carolinas and headed for Maryland. At this elevation, it’s a hot summer day.
After a quick stop at the swinging pedestrian bridge over the James River I headed for the Blue Ridge Parkway. And in about ten minutes, I’m a few thousand feet higher in my new adventure van with sweeping views of the Appalachians, s-curves and cooler weather — until our route returned us to 81 via Buena Vista and Rt. 60.
On the edge of the Maury River at the Budget Inn, I was inspired to pull out out my camera for the first time on the trip. A Washington Commanders Volkswagen, matching the motel color pallete.

As magic hour approached I found myself wandering into the Mt. Airy Fireman’s Carnival.
I grew up here and at this event but left 29 years ago in search of warmer winters and a college education. But within 90 seconds, I run into David Bly, a childhood friend who was also my high school track and field teammate. The last I saw him, was probably 1997.
I’ll be spending the next few days where I grew up, with a workshop to teach on Wednesday and Thursday — and then it’s on to the Delaware State Fair, Philly New York, Rhode Island and Maine.
