'No Kings’ Coalition Plans Oct. 18 Nationwide Protests
“Millions of Americans took to the streets in June to drown out Trump’s birthday parade. As Trump’s regime escalates his authoritarian power grab, we’re gathering again on October 18 for a nationwide day of peaceful protests to say NO KINGS,” states a Facebook post dated Sept. 2 by Indivisible, one of many participating progressive organizations in the nationwide protest movement.
The June 14 mass protest against the Trump Administration, unified under the “No Kings” theme, prompted reactions from Republican leaders — before anyone picked up a sign, spoke at a podium or marched on a sidewalk. Here, in South Carolina, we saw warnings from the attorney general and governor — and a resulting back-and forth with Democrats.
The Missouri Governor, Mike Kehoe, preemptively declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard for peaceful protests across his state. The Governor has since been sued by the son of a Republican lawmaker, for violating first amendment rights.
“It was an abuse of process to declare a false emergency when a true emergency did not exist,” the claimant writes in the lawsuit. “When Kehoe issued the order, there were no protests occurring anywhere in Missouri at all, and certainly not any that were un-peaceful.”
