Why is Columbia called Soda City?

Columbia, South Carolina is called the Soda City because locals often used Cola, as an abbreviation for Columbia when addressing mail. As a result, Cola Town is also a nickname for the Soda City. Records show that usage of Soda City dates back to the early 2000s.
The downtown farmers market also uses the Soda City moniker.
This website, Soda Citizen gets it’s name because at it’s heart, are the people who call the Soda City home.
