At the annual Hillbilly Fest in Mountain Rest, South Carolina, the kids chase a pig. At the Black Cowboy Fest in Rembert, they chase a goat. It’s summer in the Palmetto State, when southerners embrace their roots on the farm.

Rembert sits along highway 521 between Camden and Sumter and if you keep driving east, you’ll find yourself in Georgetown. But if you hung a left onto Dinkins Mill and the next right near the Francis Campbell Quick Stop bbq joint on Saturday — you would have found yourself at Greenfield Farm and the 29th annual Black Cowboy Festival. Hosted by Mark and Sandra Myers, on land her family once sharecropped, the four day festival featured educational programs, trail rides, demonstrations, live music, dance lessons, rodeo events and more.

During marquee rodeo as farmers prayed for rain, the weather held out until the final event. As the rain slowly moved in folks packed up their chairs and loved ones in a procession to a temporary parking lot. And for a few hours, there was a traffic jam on Spencer Rd. Sumter County.
